The Queen Who Saved Her People

Esther 3–10

Memory Verse: “If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31.


Theme:  Crisis over worship, who will we obey?

Jesus Opening: Matthew 4:10 – Satan tried to make Jesus “bow down” and worship him.


Haman’s Promotion
      - King Ahasuerus promotes Haman above all the princes
            - king’s commandment to bow to Haman (Esther 3:2)
            - all king’s servants bow and reverence Haman
     
      - Mordecai bows not
            - “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.” Philippians 2:10
            - king’s servant’s question Mordecai
               “Why transgressest thou the king’s commandment?”
            - daily king’s servant’s taunt Mordecai
                  - Mordecai doesn’t change
                  - king’s servants tell Haman

      - Now Haman see that Mordecai bows NOT
            - Haman full of wrathHHHhhsajdfhkllhasjHJASLDFHAHDKFJsjjfkgjgkf;

            - Application: Devil is wroth with the woman (Revelation 12:17)

Haman’s Plot Against Mordecai
      - Haman’s finds the cause: Mordecai is a Jew!
      - Scheme: Kill all the Jews!
            - Why? “neither keep they the king’s laws” (Esther 3:8)
      - Haman brings plan before King Ahasuerus
            - “If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed” (Esther 3:9)
            - I will pay 10,000 talents of silver to those who have charge of the business
     
      - Kings agrees
            - Gives Haman his ring (makes law of Medes and Persians so it cannot be changed)
            - Gives silver
            - copy of “commandment” (degree) published unto all people
           

Troubled Jews
     
      - Mordecai’s reaction
            - rends clothes
            - bitter cry
            - came before king’s gate
      - Jews throughout kingdom
            - great mourning
            - fasting

Esther Champions the Cause of Her People
     
      - Esther’s maids tell her about Mordecai
            - Esther sends clothes for calls Mordecai but he receives it not
      -Esther calls Hatach to find out what’s wrong with Mordecai
            - Mordecai tells of degree
            - Mordecai give Hatach copy of the degree in writing
            - Mordecai sends word to Esther to go in to king

      - Hatach takes word from Esther back to Mordecai
            - Can’t go “un-invited” before the king
     
      - Mordecai send word back to Esther
            - “Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14

      - Fasting and prayer

Esther Before the King
     
      - Esther puts on royal apparel
      - Stands in inner court of King’s house
            - king saw Esther standing in court
            - obtained favor in his sight
            - held out golden scepter
            - Esther draws near and touches top of scepter

      - King asks Esther of her request (Esther 5:3)

Esther Gives Banquets
     
      - Invites the king and Haman to banquet this day

      - At the first banquet,
            - kings asks again
                  - “What is thy petition? And it shall be granted thee” (Esther 5:6)

      - Esther requests king and Haman to come again tomorrow
     
      - Haman leaves joyful
            - Mordecai stood not up, nor moved for him (Esther 5:9)
            - Haman full of indignation against Mordecai
                  - at home, calls friends and Zeresh, his wife
                        - tells of banquet with king and queen
                        - tells of disgust with Mordecai

            - Gallows made

            - King cannot sleep
                  - book of chronicles read
                  - deeds of Mordecai read in saving king’s life

            - Haman lingering in court to talk to king about hanging Mordecai on gallows
                  - king asks who is in court
                  - Haman comes before king
                  - king asks Haman what should be done to he whom the king delighteth to honor
                  - Haman’s answer: (Esther 6:8)
                  - Haman commanded to give honor to Mordecai

            - Haman goes home mourning
                 
            - King’s chamberlain brings Haman to banquet (Esther 6:14)

            - Second banquet
                  - Esther’s request (Esther 7:3, 4)
                  - “Who is he and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?” (Esther 7:5)
                  - “The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman.”

                  - king is angry and goes out into palace garden
                  - Haman arises to plead for his life before Esther

                  - Haman hung on gallows

     
Esther Gives Banquets
     
      - Esther falls down before king a
            - pleads for him to put away mischief Haman planned against Jews
            - tears
            - king holds out golden scepter
            - Esther arises and stand before king

      - Esther write another degree
            - sealed with king’s ring      

Appeal
      Do you want to be like Esther and Mordecai and stand for God’s true worship?  (see Rev. 12:17 and 1 Peter 3:15)
